High Performance Buildings: Designing for Utility Costs & Carbon Emissions

Event Description

How can we decide what features to upgrade in our building projects? Most project teams use code minimum, manufacturers’ claims, anecdotes, and gut feelings to decide what insulation, HVAC system, and water heating system to use. This goes especially for solar and battery systems, too. Nick Brown has developed an approach to use hourly energy compliance modeling data to calculate utility costs and carbon emissions, so that these decisions can be made on an informed basis. We will use case studies to understand how to put this approach to work, so that you choose the appropriate envelope, mechanical, and renewable energy systems for your projects.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn how to use compliance modeling software to make informed design decisions on envelope, mechanical, and renewable systems
  • Understand how utility costs are calculated with solar systems
  • Use case studies to show how to calculate return on investment for typical building features
  • See how Zero Net Carbon design can be achieved
